Im Schuljahr 2022/23 konnten die Oberstufenschülerinnen und -schüler am Gymnasium Hittfeld das erste Mal ein bilinguales Seminarfachangebot anwählen. Die beiden Kurse, die unter der Leitung von Frau Knoll und Herrn Schumacher stattfanden, begaben sich nicht nur in abstrakter, papiergeduldiger Weise auf Forschungs- und Entdeckungsreise der zahlreichen Facetten der Global City London, sondern erkundeten die Hauptstadt Englands ganz im Sinne des Leitthemas des Kurses “London: A bustling metropolis?” auch auf eigene Faust.
Im nächsten Schuljahr besteht wieder die Möglichkeit ein bilinguales Seminarfachangebot anzuwählen (Thema: Liverpool).
Der Kurs von Frau Knoll hat das Seminarfach evaluiert beziehungsweise Fragen zum bilingualen Seminarfach beantwortet, die sicher interessierten Schülerinnen und Schülern des kommenden 12. Jahrgangs bereits vorab als Entscheidungshilfe fungieren können.

Did it fulfill your expectations?
Yes…..
- different topics which center around the main topic (historical, geographical, social perspective)
- but a lot of reading is necessary to understand the field of expertise
- writing excercises to improve writing skills and expand your vocabulary
What did you learn?
- how to write scientific papers in English (different than in German), how to structure such long texts
- how to work with scientific literature, how to quote
- deeper understanding of the topic
- getting to know London as a metropolis regarding its culture, people, history and geography
- how to write an A-level exam (English basic and advanced course)
How does it benefit you and your future?
- ability to write and format thesis papers (required at university, English abstracts are part of scientific literature (in science as well); well-prepared for university
- opens up new opportunities abroad
- access to information is often only available in English
- understanding academic papers, reports and essays and being able to utilise them
Are good English skills required?
- not necessarily when it comes to writing, because there is the possibility to write the thesis in German (but the presentation is to be held in English)
- necessary for class participation
- however, English skills are beneficial since you have to work with and understand English texts
- the final presentation will be held in English
What do you think sets this seminar course apart from other seminar courses?
- more complex due to bilingual teaching, wide range of topics concerning a foreign metropolis; class discussions
- encompasses every aspect of London (environment, economics, culture, history, literature)
- seminar trip to London (theory meets experience)
